RIP - March 17, 2025

Terrance Patrick Ryan, a dedicated advocate, spiritual leader, and community champion, passed away on March 17, 2025. He was born on January 1, 1945, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Dorothy Edna Vanderleest and Robert Richard Ryan and was raised by his mother and stepfather, Phillip Latta. Terry graduated from Ottawa Hills High School in 1963 before serving his country in the U.S. Army from 1965 to 1971, receiving an honorable discharge. He pursued higher education at Grand Valley State University, earning a Bachelor of Science in Political Science.

His professional career was defined by his unwavering commitment to public health and social justice. After early roles in retail and textile sales, Terry joined Wellness Networks (which later became AIDS Partnership Michigan) in 1986, beginning decades of advocacy in HIV/AIDS prevention and support services. He served as an HIV counselor for the Macomb County Health Department, worked extensively with the Michigan AIDS Fund, and ultimately became the CEO of the Michigan AIDS Coalition (MAC) in 2008. Under his leadership, MAC merged with Matrix Human Services in 2015, where he continued working on special projects until 2020.

Beyond his advocacy, Terry found deep spiritual fulfillment as an ordained minister through The Indiana Association of Spiritualists (Camp Chesterfield) in 2000. He served multiple terms on the organization's Board of Directors, providing guidance and mentorship to many.

Terry's lifelong mission was one of compassion, service, and creating lasting impact in the communities he touched. He is survived by his cousin, Jane Vanderleest of Grand Rapids. His legacy will live on through the many lives he changed and the organizations he strengthened.

There will be two Celebration of Life services, one in Metro Detroit (in summer 2025) and another at Camp Chesterfield in Chesterfield, Indiana (in summer/fall 2025). Addition details will be forthcoming.
